What is XAIX?

XAIX tracks the Nasdaq Global AI and Big Data Index, which screens companies based on their tie to specific AI and big data sub-themes — including machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and data infrastructure. Critically, the index uses a patent engagement score as a forward-looking filter, prioritizing companies actively developing AI IP rather than merely adopting it.

With 95 holdings spanning the US, South Korea, China, and Europe, XAIX provides the broadest geographic footprint of any AI ETF in its category. Top holdings include NVIDIA, Micron, Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, and Alibaba — capturing both the AI compute stack and the consumer AI platforms built on top of it.

At 0.35% expense ratio, XAIX is the most cost-efficient genuinely AI-focused thematic ETF available — undercutting AIQ (0.68%), BOTZ (0.69%), and WTAI (0.45%) by a wide margin.

Upcoming Catalysts

  • Patent engagement score methodology identifies companies actively investing in AI R&D — not just branding
  • Lowest expense ratio (0.35%) among genuinely AI-focused thematic ETFs — cost advantage compounds over time
  • Micron and Samsung exposure captures AI memory chip demand (HBM for GPUs) underrepresented in software-heavy AI ETFs
  • Alibaba at 5%+ gives direct exposure to Chinese AI buildout — rare in US-listed AI ETFs
  • Broad 95-holding base reduces single-stock concentration risk vs peers

Key Risks

  • China exposure (Alibaba) adds regulatory and ADR delisting risk
  • AUM still small ($110M) — could face liquidity constraints in volatile markets
  • Young fund (launched Aug 2024) with limited track record through a full market cycle
  • Broad index may dilute AI upside vs concentrated pure-plays during AI breakout periods

Compare with Similar ETFs

  • AIQ — Broad AI technology exposure — software, hardware, and infrastructure in one fund.
  • BOTZ — The original AI & robotics ETF. Pure-play exposure to intelligent machines.
